Supportive Housing Program

The Supportive Housing Program (SHP) is Home of the Sparrow’s newest initiative. The goal of SHP is to assist single women and mothers with children who are on the cusp of homelessness by providing them with financial assistance and counseling.

    Who may be eligible?
Women between the ages of 21 and 60 who are:
  • Working full-time or working part-time and enrolled in a vocational or educational program.
  • Physically, mentally and emotionally capable of finding and holding a job.
  • Substance free for at least one year outside of a residential facility

  • And, most importantly,
  • Women who want to make significant changes in their lives.

How does the Supportive Housing Program work?

Potential clients who are interested in SHP complete an application form and are asked to write an essay about their goals and future plans. They are also asked to provide references.

Clients accepted into the program may already have independent housing but are unable to afford the rent. Others may have to find affordable housing. Home of the Sparrow helps these women to find appropriate housing.

Home of the Sparrow staff contacts the client’s landlord and provides them with information about SHP. The agency agrees to pay a portion of the client’s rent directly to the landlord on a monthly basis for up to two years.

In addition to rental subsidies, Home of the Sparrow also provides the client with case management services and life skills training. An important part of the program is budgeting. Each client prepares a monthly budget with her program coordinator. At the end of each month expenses are compared to budget. Clients also receive referrals to other community services for additional assistance.
