Here are some of the possibilities:
Top Needs:
- Drivers - Many Home of the Sparrow residents have no cars and depend on public transportation to get to work. Volunteers drive them to the supermarket, doctor's appointments, job interviews, etc. Volunteer drivers must complete the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse History Clearance forms.
- Child Care - Volunteers are needed to sit for children on some weekday evenings so moms can take classes, and on occasional weekends. Time commitment is usually 1 ½ to 2 hours, ending by about 8:30 p.m. Childcare givers must have or acquire state police background checks.
- Job Finders - Resources are needed to identify employment opportunities for women seeking part-time and full-time jobs. The women's skills vary, but they all can benefit from knowing of job openings. Your networking talents can help deserving women!
Other Opportunities
- Redecorators - Form a "Revive a Room" team to rescue a bedroom with fresh paint, some cheerful art and sturdy furniture as needed. Resourceful team members could ask furniture stores for donations or scout out used furniture in good condition.
- Computer Wizards - Help the office staff refine some skills, including cropping and printing photos and improving Access databases.
- Mentors - One or more families are needed to mentor a family in our program. This is a long-term commitment that is enriching for both families.
- Organizers - A team of one or two volunteers is needed to visit each of our two houses monthly to shelve paper goods, cleaning supplies and other donated items.
- Coordinators - Help set up workdays and group fundraisers with organizations and clubs that offer to do a community service project.
- And more - Add your name to our resource list of volunteers who would teach for one or two 1-hour sessions on an area of expertise. Topics vary, but can include time and anger management, stress reduction, job readiness, nutrition, opening a bank account, home repair, etc.
